10 Movies We're Still Looking Forward to in 2010

If your anything like us then your probably still suffering from the "Inception" hangover. The symptoms include but are not limited to going back for second & third viewings of Chris Nolan's masterpiece and giving up on the rest of 2010 which with the exception of "Inception" and a handful of other quality pictures has been pretty lackluster - especially this slow summer season. However after analyzing Inception till i woke up in a cold sweat I realized we still had a half a years worth of movies to look forward to. So with that in mind I picked myself up off the ground and compiled a list of 10 movies which may still give us a reason to go to the theater in 2010. They're in no particular order, and many don't even have trailers yet but the the fact remains there is still hope prior to 2011.

The Social Network

Release Date : October 1st

Director : David Fincher

Cast : Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake , Andrew Garfield , Joseph Mazzello

Why We're Pumped : Since its inception 7 years ago Facebook has become a cultural pheononmen. In the reality TV era, everyone seemingly has the need to share their lives publicly and probably more importantly know what their friends are up to at all times. Relationship statuses on the site have become the more official than engagement rings and "Facebook" is among the leading causes of divorce in the country. So how did it all start? We find out in the "The Social Network." David Fincher, one of Tin Can's favorite directors tackles the subject matter in this Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) starrer. Eisenberg portrays Facebook founder and Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg who hatches his money making idea in his dorm room. Zuckerberg becomes the youngest Billionaire in US history as Facebook grows into monster it is today. Along the way deals with friends turned enemies, and lawsuits and other attacks against him and his site. In a world where kids barely old enough to drink turn into billionaires seemingly overnight, "The Social Network" looks to show us everything isn't always as easy as it looks. Expect a few awards for this one come Oscar time.

The Expendables

Release Date : August 13th

Director : Sylvester Stallone

Cast : Sylvester Stallone , Jason Statham , Jet Li , Dolph Lundgren with Cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Why We're Pumped : Around this time last year, "The Expendables" had me pumped for the return of the true old school action movie. Finally an R rated no holds barred shoot em up featuring the biggest stars in the history of the genre in Stallone, Ah-Nold and Willis. Not to mention a whose who cast with the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme, Wesley Snipes and Steven Seagal. Since then however the Schwarzenegger and Willis parts have been confirmed as basically 1 scene cameos and there is no Van Damme, Snipes or Seagal anywhere to be found. Instead we get 60 something Stallone paring with the action "B" team (perhaps even "C" team in some instances) Couple that with a lackluster trailer in my opinion and my expectations have cooled considerably. That being said I'm gonna give Sly the benefit of the doubt and still see his passion project on opening night. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the "Citizen Kane" of action flicks in a world full of PG-13 wannabe's Sly can prove that he's still the king.

Buried

Release Date : October 8th (wide)

Director : Rodrigo Cortes

Cast : Ryan Reynolds

Why We're Pumped : This movie had one of the best teaser trailers I've seen in a long time. A completely black screen with nothing but breathing and moving around heard, until around 40 seconds in a brief flicker of light for you to discover Ryan Reynolds in a coffin, buried under the ground. Yea defiantly left me wanting to know more. Reynolds plays a contractor in Iraq, who is captured and buried alive by a group of Iraqis. With only 90 minutes of oxygen,  a lighter and a cell phone to work with the Reynolds character "Paul Conroy" must find a way out before it is too late. We're trying not to read too much about it , for fear of spoilers but after debuting at Sundance earlier this year the movie has gotten very good reviews and looks like an original thriller to check out this fall. While we like Ryan Reynolds good enough his best roles have been in comedies, does he have the chops to keep us engaged for 90 minutes while lying in a box? That's the question we are looking forward to having answered.

Devil

Release Date : September 17th

Director : Drew and John Erick Dowdle

Cast : Chris Messina , Geoffrey Arend , Bojana Novakovic , Logan Marshall-Green

Why We're Pumped : Overshadowing this upcoming movie is M. Night Shyamalan's name all over the project. M. Night has become all but a joke in recent years with failures like "The Happening" and most recent "The Last Airbender." However there are reasons to be optimistic, first of all Night only came up with the original idea here. He did not write the screenplay or direct the movie. Even the biggest M. Night haters must admit his ideas are at least usually solid, even though his execution has been rather.....well lacking. Second reason not to write this movie off due to your Shyamalan hate is the fact that the new trailer looks pretty awesome. Finally the concept sounds interesting, 5 people stuck in an elevator in which one of the 5 turns out to be the Devil himself. We're hoping people give this one a chance despite M. Night's involvement as it could be a true Hitchcockian tale for the new century.

Wall Street 2 : Money Never Sleeps

Release Date : September 24th

Director : Oliver Stone

Cast : Shia LeBeouf , Michael Douglas , Carey Mulligan , Josh Brolin , Charlie Sheen

Why We're Pumped : 23 years after the first installment, Wall Street 2 is finally on the verge of hitting theaters. The first movie is one of our all time favorites, and Gordon Gekko is a cinematic legend in our minds. This movie based in 2008 follows newly released from prison Gekko as he takes on a new protege in Shia's character Jacob Moore. Moore becomes involved with Gekkos daughter and must decide if Gordon is really looking out for his best interests or not as the global economy teeters on the brink of disaster. A lot of people seemed turned off because of LeBeouf's casting in this flick, I won't be too quick to judge. While LeBeouf has only really starred in "blockbuster" type movies where his talents aren't usually tested, he's shown me enough to give him a fair chance here. This movie could make or break him for serious major roles in the future. Michael Douglas is one of my all time favorites and I hope he can still channel his greatest achievement in wall street mogul Gekko. Oh and did we mention a cameo from original Wall Street star Charlie Sheen? We're Ready.

The Next Three Days
Release Date : November 19th

Director : Paul Haggis

Cast : Russell Crowe , Elizabeth Banks , Olivia Wilde , Liam Neeson

Why We're Pumped : Russell Crowe is easily one of our favorite actors, and we believe there may be Oscar buzz in this remake of the french film "Pour Elle" (Anything for Her). Crowe plays the husband of a women (played by Elizabeth Banks) who is sent to jail for murder, a murder she contends she did not commit. Three years into her sentence Crowe's life is falling apart as he tries to raise his son and teach at the local college. After her final appeal is rejected, John Brennan (Crowe) decides the only solution is to break his wife out of jail.  Sounds pretty intense and we can't wait to see a trailer. In the meantime we'll trust that this Paul Haggis (Crash) film will be well made and extremely well acted.

The Fighter
Release Date : December 10th

Director : David O. Russell

Cast : Christian Bale , Mark Wahlberg , Amy Adams

Why We're Pumped : As an avid boxing fan I can tell you that the Micky Ward, Arturro Gatti trilogy of fights were three of the most entertaining fights in the history of boxing. That being said you won't see anything about them in this biopic on the earlier years of "Irish" Micky Ward (Wahlberg) which focuses on his relationship with his Brother and trainer Dickie Eklund (Bale). As a Ward fan I'm excited to see this story about his start in boxing fleshed out on screen and the fact that we get to see it with Bale and Wahlberg in the leading roles is an amazing bonus. Amy Adams is also quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses and should shine along the two male leads. Here's hoping this movie turns out good and could possibly finally land Christian Bale an Oscar nod (if not win) for Best Supporting Actor. No trailer as of yet, but as soon as their is one we'll have it for you.

True Grit
Release Date : December 25th

Director : Joel and Ethan Coen

Cast : Jeff Bridges , Josh Brolin , Matt Damon , Barry Pepper , Hailee Steinfeld

Why We're Pumped : Merry Christmas indeed. All you have to do to get us excited for this one is to mention the Coen Brothers. While we are tiring of the constant stream of remakes these days, we couldn't help but get a little smirk when hearing the Coens would remake the 1969 John Wayne classic "True Grit." Then we got really excited when we heard that "The Dude" himself,  Best Actor Award winner Jeff Bridges would don the eye patch and portray "Rooster Cogburn" stepping into John Wayne's boots. The movie follows a 14 year old Mattie Ross (Steinfeld) who recruits US Marshall Cogburn to help track down her father's murderer Tom Chaney (Brolin). As they trek into the Indian Nations after Chaney the two are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Even with all the big names, the buzz is on young Hailee Steinfeld who many say will be a fast rising star after this hits cinemas. The cast looks awesome, and with the Coens at the helm this remake should live up to the name of the original classic western.

The Last Exorcism

Release Date : August 27th

Director : Daniel Stamm

Cast : Patrick Fabian , Ashley Bell , Louis Herthum

Why We're Pumped : Last year a no budget horror film swept the nation in the form of the surprise hit "Paranormal Activity." Now this year the much anticipated sequel will hit theaters with a inflated budget (not to mention expectations) Personally I think it'll be hard to catch lighting twice (Blair Witch I'm looking at you). Instead of waiting and buying a ticket to see what I'm sure will be a disappointing sequel, why not jump on this bandwagon before it takes off. "The Last Exorcism" is the tell of a troubled evangelical preacher who has lost his faith. He decides to hang up his collar, but to do one last Exorcism before he does. Right behind him on this last journey is a documentary film crew to capture all the crazy happenings. Interesting concept, and I'm intrigued to see the finished product. Premiered at the LA Film Fest and will go wide in late August, can it get some Paranormal Activity type love? Probably not. What sold PA in my opinion was that although the two leads were no names, they did a fine job in that film. Will this no name cast be able to carry the film? We're banking on this being the scariest film of the year.

The Tree of Life

Release Date : Unknown (Looking like November)

Director : Terrence Malick

Cast : Brad Pitt , Sean Penn , Jessica Chastain

Why We're Pumped : The buzz for this movie has been growing for a while, and while we think it will be awfully hard for any movie to out shine "Inception" this year if any movie can it will probably be the "The Tree of Life". From director Terrence Malick who has made just 6 movies over a 40 year career. This is a tale of three brothers, the eldest of which, Jack is at odds with his mothers caring and soulful look at the world and his fathers (Pitt) selfish and "me first" attitude. He soon witnesses his first taste of death and ugliest the world has to offer as we follow his evolution into adult hood where he is portrayed by Sean Penn. This thing WILL win Oscars whenever it gets released (there has been distributor problems.) We're dying for a trailer over here, as at this point we don't have a whole lot to go on except some vague plot points. Malick has been working on this for around 5 years now and with Pitt and Penn on board we are expecting big things.
